Technology: Art of glass improves displays

A liquid-crystal display that has its electronics printed onto the glass of the display received its first public showing at the ESPRIT information technology conference in Brussels last week. LCD designers currently have to make electrical connections between the many thousands of picture elements (pixels) and control electronics at the edge of the display. The result is a bulky display with complicated wiring susceptible to failure. One solution is to move the control electronics to within the display itself. The circuits, called drivers, are printed on the glass in a very thin transparent layer of silicon. Several companies have already made such LCDs, but they found that ordinary glass cannot withstand the high temperatures needed to purify the silicon. They had to use expensive quartz instead. Researchers from the British company GEC, based in North London, have now made an integrated display from silicon on glass at a much lower temperature.
